Fishing on the Eel River

You know what they say, “A bad day fishin’ is better than the best day at work”. Well this post is about a bad day fishin’. Sunshine and 70 degrees on the scenic bank of the Eel River in Redcrest California, I’ve got no complaints. I’ve got my folding camp chair, fishing pole, tackle box, a fresh carton of worms from the local hardware store and no place else I have to be. 3 hours of fishing got me one  tiny little trout but I put him back. At one point I got some timid nibbles and nothing for a while so I reeled in the line to find my bait had been eaten by a newt. I didn’t want to hurt him but getting the hook out of a newts mouth is surprisingly difficult. He seemed no worse for the wear as he raced off, back into the water once I got him loose. Compared to holding a fish to retrieve the hook, holding a newt is a little on the creepy side.
